Student named to honor societies
SHIPPENSBURG — Camryn Hoff, an upcoming senior at Shippensburg University, was recently inducted into the National Honor Society for Criminal Justice and the National Honor Society for Sociology.
Hoff is a criminal justice major with a minor in sociology. She currently carries a 3.77 grade point average.
This summer, Hoff is serving an internship in the Criminal Investigative Unit in Harrisburg.
After graduation in May 2024, she will pursue her master's degree at Shippensburg University.
Lock Haven holds pinning ceremony
LOCK HAVEN — The Commonwealth University-Lock Haven School of Nursing recently held a pinning ceremony for all graduating Associate of Science in Nursing students at the Clearfield location.
During the ceremony, the students pledged their oath to the profession of nursing and received their pins and honors students also received their cords.
Speaker for the ceremony was Therese Sayers, retired Lock Haven faculty member, and Jennifer DellAntonio, nursing department chair, conducted the pinning ceremony. Student speaker was Rebekah Cutler.
Among the students receiving their pin, were:
Clearfield — Karli Bietz, Courtney Buck, Rebekah Cutler, Avry Grumblatt and Elizabeth Higgins.
Roaring Spring — Danielle Eger.
DuBois — Mackenzie Johnson and Amber Weisner.
Tyrone — Katelyn Lavelle.
Philipsburg — Emily Peters.
Houtzdale — Whitney Stiner.
Curwensville — Kylie Veihdeffer.
Kylertown — Elijah Williams.
Students part of Scholars Forum
INDIANA, Pa. — Two students from Blair County at Indiana University of Pennsylvania presented original research during IUP's Scholars Forum, held as part of IUP's Research Appreciation Week. They include:
n Josh Colasante, a geoscience major from Altoona. He presented a research poster, "Paleoenvironmental Stratigraphic Reconstruction and Control on the Distribution of the Lower Keyser Formation of Central Pennsylvania." Dr. Jonathan Warnock, Department of Geography, Geology, Environment and Planning, is the research project faculty mentor. Colasante is the son of Kevin and Lynn Colasante and is a 2006 graduate of Altoona Area High School. He is a dean's list student and provost scholar and has won a number of scholarships. He is a member of the Geological Society of IUP, Beta Beta Beta honor society, and Phi Eta Sigma honor society.
n Karlie Thompson, a biology major in the biology honors program from Altoona. She presented a research poster, "The Effect of Body Condition on Neophobia in Zebra Finches; A Many Birds Study." Dr. Paul Nealen, biology, is the research project faculty mentor. She is the daughter of Theresa Thompson and Brett Thompson and is a 2020 graduate of Altoona Area Senior High School.
Research Appreciation Week spotlights the spirit of innovation and collaboration shared by all disciplines and recognizes the contributions that IUP's original research and scholarship make to this region and to the world. IUP researchers received more than $12 million in research and sponsored activity funds for academic year 2021-2022.
The 2023 Scholars Forum featured 159 IUP undergraduate and graduate students and 31 high school students. A total of 92 research posters were part of the poster presentation session and 20 original artworks were part of the Scholars Forum Juried Art Exhibition.
Student is Waynesburg valedictorian
WAYNESBURG — Maddison Butler of Altoona, an early childhood education with special education certification graduate, was named one of three Waynesburg University valedictorians for the Class of 2023. She is the daughter of Scott and Danelle Butler.
As a student, Butler served as the director of Waynesburg's student-led improv comedy show "WU's Line." She was also a member of the Education honors society, Kappa Delta Pi.
Butler shared that her favorite parts of her undergraduate journey were the bonds she formed on campus with fellow classmates turned friends.
"My favorite moment at WU was meeting friends I will have for the rest of my life as well as my fiancé," shared Butler.
Her future plans are to secure a teaching position in the Altoona area.
